Discovering the Castelli Romani by e-bike
A full day e-bike tour from Rome to the lovely hills south-east of the Town – 35 miles
The program:
We ride through the notorious Appian Way, from the Circus Maximus to the edges of the huge city. This stony road was built by the Romans long before Christ, and today serves as an almost car free bike route through the pleasant Roman countryside, dotted with ruins of ancient monuments. After about 15 miles we start climbing the Castelli hills amidst old castles and wine yards producing the well known Frascati wine. A short tunnel brings us through the vulcano crater and down to the shores of the first of the two lakes on this side of Rome, the so called Lake Albano. The road then climbs steeply up to one of the most pittoresque villages in this area, namely Castel Gandolfo, where the Popes own a monumental Summer Palace offering a fabulous view across the circular shaped deep blue lake, surrounded by lush green woods. We here will be served a typical Italian lunch while tasting good local wines.
After lunch we continue towards the loveliest of all these small towns, called Nemi. The small road descends all the way down to the shores of the lake of the same name in the bottom of the crater, before winding up on the opposite side through thick forests to the tiny medieval town, where a glass of Prosecco accompanied by small local strawberries combines excellently with the fantastic view all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. From Nemi we follow the road through the other Castelli towns Genzano and Ariccia to the railway station in Albano, where we catch the train that brings us back to Rome in 50 minutes.
Duration of the bike tour: from 9:00 to 18:00
The price includes: electric mountain bike with front bag and helmet, lunch with wine tasting, English-speaking guide and train ticket.
